Paul Sietsema

Paul Sietsema, "Modernist Struggle," ink and enamel on paper, 2008

This artist, Paul Sietsema, was an influence in my concept and proposal. I saw a show of his work at MOMA a little over a year ago, and I was knocked out by the work. This piece is one I saw, there’s a gorgeous material use here, with the sharp and flat detailing in the ink painting of the newsprint, and the heavy tactile enamel spill on top.

At the time when I first saw this work, I was doing renderings and compositions from watercolor paintings and spills and coffee stains, with no engagement to the newspaper itself. Of course, I thought of the show again with the 365 Days of print, and New News is Old News.

As I grow more interested in pushing my drawings for the residency to relate and refer more to the newsprint as an object, I wanted to see Sietsema’s work again, and share it.
