The opening was last night, but the store will be open until March 22nd. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Double-A-Projects-Presents-Free-Store/57088891257

Artists Athena Robles and Anna Stein will present Free Store, an exhibition and non-commercial storefront installation, in lower Manhattan.

Part cultural pop-up shop, part second hand boutique, the project is a networking model of economic sustenance that can be used in cities worldwide.

    How Free Store Works:

    Free Shopping
Using the barter and exchange system, visitors can give something useful or get something useful at Free Store. Free Store will accept donations of items such as books and clothing, offer these items for the taking, and stock a few items produced inhouse by the artists.

    One World Currency
Free Store will distribute World Bills, a global currency that potentially could be used at any free store in the Global Free Store chain. Contributors to Free Store will receive World Bills for goods and services donated to the store. They can then use these bills to trade with other participants or in future free stores in this series.

Special projects and events by curators Felicity Hogan, Edwin Ramoran, Julie Sengle and Herb Tam.

This first Global Free Store will open on Thursday, February 19th and remain open until Sunday, March 22nd.

Exhibition Hours: Thursday–Saturday 12–7PM; Sunday 12–5PM and by appt

    To get there by subway, take the 4, 5, 6, J, M, Z to Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall or Fulton/Broadway-Nassau Street; or A, C, 2, 3 to Broadway-Nassau Street.

Free Store is sponsored in part by The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and The September 11th Fund.

I went to see Our City Dreams by Chiara Clemente which is playing at the Film Forum for one more day. It portrays five highly accomplished women artists, aged 30-80, and New York City as feminine.
It is a beautiful film and a fine contribution. I really liked the way it pictured each woman’s process and art works and getting to see some things I would otherwise have missed. Linda Cummings and I watched it and appreciated the impact of what we do and love as children on what we make as artists. For example, Swoon’s raft down the Mississippi is an very joyful group adventure.

Some crashes had been registered, and many sudden shifts. Everytime i really bad crash happens, the act of making a “promisse” happens.  Maybe promisses  equal bail outs and they seem to work temporarily only too.

Money promises happiness.  I’ve been thinking that maybe we can use money to turn it in other kind of promisses?

    Final Outputs:

    Graph of Personal Market

    Love/Death Coin.

    Promisse Coin

    Graph:

Requires sound and projector. It can run out of a computer the code, or i can make a video file of it.  Maybe Headphones are a good option.

    Coin:

Projection over a rounded surface that functions as screen. The projection ideally is from both sides. The screen is suspended from cieling.

In case is not possible to install this i will make the coins out of fabric and clear vinyl, and stiching the peaks graph.

Based on the values related with my personal assets, i’m coding the graphs to be able to show the evolution of them during the period of Jan 15 to Feb 10 (so still in progress).  When hitting the different limits of the values of my market, different notes will play and they will dissapear when crashing.   The system used to graph is solely based in my personal high and lows but observing how they behave, make completely sense in the way my social relations and daily existance works.

While working in the idea of creating coins that could be exchange for feelings or acts, i realized that creating coins that store the values i do consider worth some exchange or trade, was just following the same old materialistic logic. Therefore i decided to make immaterial coins ans stick to the idea of money rather than currency. These are basically the prototype as i need to finish the graph, to select the peaks of my personal market, to code the mountain on this coins.

    projections

The coin is meant to be projected over a white fabric surface made of a white scraps and leftover, from both sides.
