Finishing up this piece has been an adventure. I’ve created a little installation behind the hostel. In this quite corner is where I meet beautiful people like Julie’s kids, who I taught how to spray paint today. It was refreshing to get away from the work and teach. Teaching helped ease the suns rays…

Today I had a beautiful conversation with a worker from the hostel named Nicolas about how language informs power. How in language we can oppress people to the point where hierarchies are built. Even though our native languages are different we understood how oppressive both languages were towards women….yup back to patriarchal masculinity!

We brought back language to sexual and political identity, how matter-of-fact language and clear communication is power but because we oppress women in language since we are little it is a really hard skill to practice and become comfortable with. This is why I continue to do the work that I do because I want people to talk to each other. Let’s talk about political identity and sexual identity and everything in between! Let us not normalize our experience.

We can communicate with each other. I make fun of communication in this piece, which I decided to name “Just Add Water” (referencing the instant pancake mix by Aunt Jemima) by showing people the “simple steps” to peace, to communication, to love…….to good tasting food. “It” is not simple because of history but there are simple things we can do to control our history.

Cyprus is pretty dope and spending it with the WW Residency is even better! Tonight is our meet and greet where we will meet the other artist and present our work. I will show them the animation I worked on and some pics of my murals. I want to mix the two…The original plan was to project an animation but I’m starting to think that it could be pretty awesome to play with public art here. I found this awesome website on Cyprian graffiti and am trying to contact some of the artist. Auntie J on a wall in Cyprus…sounds good. It would be awesome to use the image of a mural as a the take away for our August show. **crossing fingers**

I took a much needed break from Auntie J for two weeks and returned with a more humble approach to the video. I realized that I had to treat the celebrity news with sincerity and not exaggerate anymore than what has been exaggerated. The loops really speak for themselves and so the voice over didn’t have to be the cherry on the cake. I had (still have) problems using my voice for projects but for this piece I trusted that my Hispanic accent should do the trick. I’m interested in getting opinions on the audio before I master the levels. I want to know if the my voice is appropriate—for the first time in my life I think it might be but I would love the feed back.
