_gaia will be opening its doors for the Neumann Leathers Open Studios event. Many artist studios will be open for this one day event. Do come out to see all of the amazing artists throughout the halls of this unique place which is under threat of development.

Neumann Leathers Open Studios
Sunday, May 18
1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Save Neumann Leathers! see the Neumann Leathers Tenants Association website for more information.

The public is invited to see the thriving arts community that still exists at Neumann, which is currently threatened by new development—development that will completely destroy one of the city’s last artistic and historic arts complexes. Extraordinary efforts are in place to ensure the continuation of this wonderful Hoboken legacy, which will not only preserve some existing structures, but also create new ones. The current “Piazza Plan,” which has been presented by the NLTA, will also create public space that will benefit all Hoboken citizens.

SCARF, HAT, SOCK – A BEGINNER’S KNITTING COURSE

Knitting is fun and easy to learn! Feel the satisfaction of wearing something you made yourself. Learn to craft beautiful, practical items and gifts with your own hands. Knitting is a skill you will treasure and enjoy.

No experience required! This six-week course will cover all basic knitting techniques. Once you learn to knit a sock, you will be able to knit anything!

*Knitting is fun for everyone – all ages are welcome. My grandmother taught me to knit on my eleventh birthday, and she learned from her grandmother when she was very small. Start a new tradition just in time for Mother’s Day – sign up with a sister, a friend, a daughter or a son!

Time: Saturdays, 2pm – 4pm
Dates: May 3 – June 7
Tuition: $75 for the six-week course

Weekly classes are held at _gaia studio at 66 Willow Avenue, Hoboken, New Jersey.

Please email rachael@gaiastudio.org to request a registration form.

Introduction to Life Drawing
(BEGINNER TO INTERMEDIATE LEVEL)

This weekly life-drawing class is geared toward beginners, but all levels are welcome to participate. Beginners with no previous instruction or intermediate-level artists seeking to brush up on their skills will benefit equally from this six-week class.

A live model will be present at every session. You will be surprised to discover how familiar you already are with the human body and how much easier it is to learn to draw from a three-dimensional form. Beginners working from two-dimensional sources such as photographs may often be frustrated with flat, lifeless results. By learning to draw from life, you will gain a new sense of fluidity and rapidity and your drawings will reflect the liveliness of the human form, and capture more than a single moment of time.

This six-week course covers basic drawing foundations, and will emphasize symmetry, proportion, weight and gesture. Basic materials for black-and-white renderings will be required.
Time: Saturdays, 10am – 1pm
Dates: May 3 – June 7
Tuition: $150 for the six-week course

Weekly classes are held at _gaia studio at 66 Willow Avenue, Hoboken, New Jersey.

Please email rachael@gaiastudio.org to request a registration form or further information.

“Every woman and man can relate to the monologues,” Lillian Ribeiro (director) says, explaining that the social facets of the play are not the only reasons to see it. “For this year, what I think is entertaining is some of the people who will be performing. It’s not only actresses, but it’s people you know from the community, like Diana [Schwaeble, managing editor] of the Hudson Reporter. And there’s Geri Fallo [Hoboken’s director of Cultural Affairs], who’s also known in the community. ”

The charitable cause remains, of course, at the heart of the play in the spirit of V-Day, which Figueiredo describes in terms of its global aim:

“It’s a response and a message to stop violence against women and girls and to empower them to live life to the fullest and to really do what they dream to do. It means different things to different people.”
